Decades of tree and biomass study jointly conducted by Florida State University and Shell Energy have resulted in the planting of the largest single "Energy Crop Plantation" within the United States.
This Plantation spans approximately one hundred thirty acres and is home to approximately two-hundred and fifty-thousand planted trees such as cottonwoods (native to the region) and eucalyptus (which are non-invasive) along with a variety of row crops including soybeans.
This organization of "super trees" was brought into being as a result of the University's joint research with other agencies including Shell, the United States Department of Energy, the Common Purpose Institute, as well as groups of various people who are trying to develop renewable energy sources for the future.
This study is focused on the planting and processing of biomass energy supplies from fast-growing crops known as "closed loop biomass" or simply "energy crops".
The project seeks to develop "power plants" including wood-pulp or wood-fiber plants and clean bio-gas to be utilized by industries. Plants like sugarcane which could be employed for ethanol development and crops like soybeans for bio-diesel fuel production.
University involvement in alternative energy research is also going on at Penn State University. At Penn State, special analysis is focused on the growth and development of hydrogen power as a practical sustainable energy source.
The researchers involved believe that mankind is moving toward a hydrogen-fueled economy on account of the needs for us to reduce air pollution and locate other sources of energy besides petroleum to power up the United States.
